Online Masters in Healthcare Scholarships
Do you want to increase your salary and your position at work with further education and an advanced master’s degree in health care? One way to make sure you come out ahead upon graduation is to pay for a portion of that education with scholarships. Like grants, scholarships are gifted to health school students with no repayment necessary.
However, many scholarships require that you maintain a healthy grade point average (GPA) or take a required number of classes per semester or quarter. The most common types of scholarships are based upon student merit, financial needs, athleticism, ethnicity, gender and field of study. But, you can find scholarships for disabled students, your degree (graduate) and for any special talents you may harbor, such as writing or art.
While scholarships do not need to pertain to your field of study, the health care field provides numerous opportunities to obtain scholarships based upon field of study. Some scholarships may reflect the missions or values of a particular company (such as Colgate for dental hygienist scholarships). Others may be offered by government departments such as the U.S. Department of Health’s National Health Service Corp Scholarship Program that is geared toward training to become allopathic physicians, osteopathic physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants or nurse midwives.
Other scholarships are offered by the federal government, and those can be found at Students.gov. State government sources and college and university financial aid offices also carry information about scholarships you may earn. If you have not decided upon which school you want to attend, you might consider choosing a school based upon the tuition offered. For instance, the U.S. Army provides training in health care in exchange for your service in the Army.
Another resource for scholarships includes areas included under fellowships and internships. In both cases, the funds offered often require that you spend time on-site in research or in work. Fellowships often provide a small stipend to cover travel or living arrangements for a short period of time. Internships provide invaluable hands-on experience for the student who wants to adds skills to a valuable resume.
Private and public organizations also offer scholarships. If you or your parents were members of the military or police force, you might find scholarship funds available from those sources. Also, organizations that represent certain diseases and conditions such as the American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc., may provide fellowships and research grants to work toward more understanding in a given field of study.
Many of these scholarships, fellowships and internships are available only to master’s-level students, and sometimes they are not available until your second year. Accordingly, some scholarships are available to alumni and to honor society members at your alma mater or nationwide. So you’ll need to be aware of what is available and make sure you are eligible and on time when you apply for these funds. The time and effort you put forth in your scholarship searches and applications may mean far less debt when you graduate.
